Langford actor returns to silver screen as lead in sci-fi horror film
Brendan Mayer — News Staff
Langford actor Asher Grayson Percival, 13, is back on the big screen as a lead in the sci-fi horror film Kids vs. Aliens.
Grayson plays Jack in the film, which was released in select theatres and on demand Friday (Jan. 20).
“It’s about a group of friends that are making a wrestling movie together, then aliens attack during a Halloween house party,” Grayson said. “They attack from a spaceship that fell into a lake behind the house.”
Grayson worked on the film in Halifax for six weeks.
“It was one of the best six weeks of my life,” Grayson said. “We shot during the night a lot which was really fun. We are always wet or looking wet because we got dragged into the water. It was really cold.”
Kids vs. Aliens was written by Jason Eisener and John Davies and directed by Eisener.
“The film has had quite good reviews overall,” Grayson said. “I don’t read too many of them though.”
Grayson was inspired to begin acting professionally after joining a musical theatre program when he was in kindergarten.
“That started this whole thing. I really enjoyed it. I also always really liked watching movies and wondered what was behind the camera. I thought that was super interesting.”
He got his first gig as a background actor on the TV series Pup Academy.
“When I got that first opportunity, I just jumped on it,” Grayson said. “I think I was about seven or eight years old and since then, I’ve just kept going forward.”
The Vic Theatre will be hosting a special screening of Kids vs. Aliens at 7 p.m. on Jan 29. Grayson will be at the event to answer questions after the screening.
“I’m super excited for it,” Grayson added. “I think the best way to watch a movie like this is in a theatre. It makes the movie so good.”

Suspect arrested in dumpster after grocery store staff threatened
(News brief)
A robbery suspect was arrested after jumping into a large dumpster near a West Shore grocery store.
The West Shore RCMP was called to the Quality Foods location in View Royal on Jan. 20 for reports of a man brandishing a screwdriver and threatening to harm staff.
When police arrived, according to a release, they were told the suspect had attempted to leave the store with a cart full of unpaid groceries. When staff confronted the suspect, he threatened staff. Staff members were not injured during the incident.
The 34-year-old man then fled the store on foot and jumped into a large nearby dumpster.
He was found and arrested without further incident.

Langford Legion has catalytic converter stolen from van
Bailey Moreton — News Staff
The catalytic converter was stolen off of one of the Langford Royal Canadian Legion’s vans early Wednesday (Jan. 25) morning.
The van was parked outside the Legion Branch 91 building on Station Avenue, with the theft taking place at around 1 a.m.
“I was there but I didn’t hear it till the last minute,” said Norm Scott, president of the Langford Legion.
The van was frequently used by the Legion to help its senior members with transport to various activities, and by other community groups like the Westshore Rebels.
West Shore RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Nancy Saggar said there’s no suspect currently related to the incident.
Saggar noted there was a spate of similar thefts around the end of 2022.
Recently, Sidney-North Saanich RCMP was warning people about an increase in catalytic converter theft after several incidents have seen cars stripped of their exhaust systems. Catalytic converters are commonly stolen to be sold for the metal they contain, according to a statement from Sidney-North Saanich RCMP Cpl. Andres Sanchez.
Scott said the Legion’s van is insured through the City of Langford, so he’ll have to coordinate with them before getting the van repaired. Without insurance, Scott estimated would it cost a few thousand dollars to get the van fixed.
