Organization Information
5. What is your organization’s history of providing community benefit to the residents of Langford?
Belmont Secondary School is building a Musical Theatre Program that will be putting on annual full-length Broadway shows each March, starting in March 2025. Tickets for the productions are open to ALL community members to come and watch. At this time, there are not many arts programs for teens or students within the Langford community compared to neighboring communities. Bringing more arts programs into the area that the community can enjoy, and that youth have access to, is vital to a growing community. I personally love building programs and have moved to Belmont as my last build at Lambrick Park Secondary is thriving and doing well, and I believe Belmont deserves the same great programming.
We are a public school of now 1,700 students. With this program, it means that Musical Theatre is now a free program for students to participate in; making it accessible to all 1,700 of Belmont's students. Students can choose to audition for the cast, or participate in the production crew, or play in the pit orchestra alongside some professional musicians. Musicals are very expensive and because of the structure, this is a fully fund-raised program. An established program can support itself once developed, but it is more difficult in the first few years as everything has to be bought or built. In order to run Musical Theatre well and put on quality performances we are also working on repairs and upgrades to the theatre at Belmont, which is available for community groups to rent.
6. What is your organization’s role or niche in the community? What makes it different from other similar organizations?
(Answer included above; program is a free school-based musical theatre program accessible to all students and the wider Langford community; building stock, props, costumes, and upgrading theatre facilities to serve community rentals and future productions.)
Program, Project, or Event Description
7. Description and need for Grant in Aid
Our target audience is twofold. First, the students at Belmont who are directly involved in the production, along with the Belmont community as a whole. Second, the full city of Langford, as it is a public performance that will be an annual event that people look forward to attending year after year.
The main objective is to provide more positive and healthy arts programs for our teens that are producing high end performances. Being a school program also means it is at no cost to the kids, so it is accessible to all demographics of teens. More specifically, this year, as we are in a building year, the main goal, if we were to receive grant funds, is to build a stock of set pieces, props and costumes, plus revamp the sound and lighting technology to benefit us and the productions for years to come.
As mentioned above, the main use of the funds would be to build as many stock pieces as possible for this years production which can also be used as a foundation moving forward for future shows. As of now, there is almost no stock to work from and we are working in a space that needs a lot of TLC. Furthermore, we will have to rent technology year after year, unless we can afford to invest in sound equipment of our own, which then can be rented by the public along with the space.
Work Plan and Timeline
- Rehearsals have begun; set design and build started.
- Performance run: March 5 - 9th, 2025.
- January: focused on building the stock theatre flats for set, and creating costumes and props.
- February: painting, details, polishing the performance; includes hired musicians with students for a pit orchestra.
- Post-show: saving everything for future productions.
Anticipated participation/attendance:
- About 70 students involved plus parents.
- Five performances, venue capacity 280 people → approximately 1,500 total attendees.
8. If awarded less than requested — anticipated impacts
We have already started rehearsing the production and have just begun designing and building the set, but we are very limited in the funds we can use at the point. The more funds we have the more we can build, which will help both students and audiences have an amazing experience and production. We are hoping to raise all the base costs in year one so we don't need to do as much fundraising in years to come and can focus more on the students and the show part of the project. If we don't raise enough we will have to scale back this year and keep pushing hard for funds next year.
Budget Information
Please attach your program, organization, project, or event budget. This should include all revenue classified as either secured and speculative.
9. Special issues/circumstances affecting revenue or expenses
This year's revenue is a very big unknown, as we have no idea how many tickets we will be able to sell. I am very good at Marketing, but as this is a new event, people will not yet know to watch for it, other than families connected to students in the production.
10. Attempts to secure additional funding / secured funding
- Secured $3,000 from the school PAC to help with show royalties.
- Hosted a "Dessert Night, Silent Auction" which raised $2,500.
- Planning to seek sponsorships by selling ad space in program.
- Schools don't qualify for arts grants so this is the only public grant found to apply for.
- School working to get the speaker system fixed in the theatre for around $10,000 (not yet confirmed).
Community Involvement and Value
11. Environmental and sustainability initiatives
What I have designed for both set, costumes, and props for the show are all things that can be reused by the program for years to come. Which cuts down on cost and waste for all future productions.
12. Volunteer needs
- Are you looking for volunteers from the community? YES
- Contact: via school / program (contact person listed above)
Other notes:
- Many volunteers connected to students are already involved, but goal is for productions to be as student-run and designed as possible.
- First year is most expensive as stocks and reputation are built. The applicant has built programs at two previous schools and transferred to Belmont specifically to build Musical Theatre. Website from last school program: www.lpssmusicaltheatre.ca
